In the past we've been able to help system performance by disabling virus
checking in the directory MapInfo uses for temp files - otherwise they're
all getting checked (double? Triple? checked) as they get created.

Not all virus checkers allow this and it may breach your security policy -
but worth checking.

Subject: Re: MI-L ODBC Refresh from Access97 Very Sloooow

Hi Alistair,

We recently similarly had a machine that was extremely slow compared to
other machines doing the same tasks. It puzzled us
immensely, and nobody seemed to know the answer. Then someone bothered to
check its virus checking measures, and it turned out the
machine not only was doing triple virus checks but also in some instances
was checking all file types instead of just programs. When
optimized, i.e. by shutting down all unnecessary checking, the machine went
back to normal working performance.

Just an idea of where to look.
