Elizabeth, As far as I remember MapInfo support GeoTiff not the Tiff World File (TWF). Are you sure you have done this before ? Maybe you used some tool ?

MapInfo wants me to register TFW files say NOTHING about the projection. It just associates image pixel locations with real world coordinates. Until you know the EXACT projection of the image, you can NOT properly register the image.
