Thank you Peter and Ian, Switching from the LaserJet 4250 to an HP800GL as the Windows default printer seems to have solved this.
Interestingly enough, prior to this problem this PC would fail to open the layout window in v. 6.5 workspaces. I looked at the Output > Options > Printer and saw the user's default window printer was the 4250, but opted to set the MapInfo Preferred to the 800GL. This fixed the problem w/ opening layouts, but still didn't suffice w/ printing the layout. Once again, thanks for all the suggestions. Harold R.
