Nicolas, You are right, line placement of shields is not well behaved.
Spacing is supposed to be the distance, in pixels, between successive shields along the line. Min_distance is the minimum distance, in pixels, allowed between a new potential shield and an previously rendered existing text or shield. Been looking into for last couple nights, but have not gotten very far ...
