Last year was the Mapnik project's first year participating in Google Summer of Code.
Artem, Rob, Mike, Tom, and I helped scope and mentor projects by two fantastic students, Carlos and Herm, who are both now core committers. Rob and I also enjoyed traveling to the Google Summer of Code Mentors summit in October to learn more about the program, meet other organization mentors, and hack on Mapnik code together. I'm excited to see that Google has announced the 2011 program and applications for organizations to participate can be submitted in 10 days (the 28th). So, for both potential students and mentors, I encourage you to starting thinking about great project ideas!
