I had this problem when I first tried to render contours, and the problem was the projection - the contours were in lat/lon and the rest of the data mercator. This meant that the contours layer needed a projection string like: +proj=latlong +datum=WGS84 compared to the OSM data layers that have a projection like: +proj=merc +a=6378137 +b=6378137 +lat_ts=0.0 +lon_0=0.0 +x_0=0.0 +y_0=0 +k=1.0 +units=m +nadgrids=@null +no_defs
