there are some "quirks" with this feature.
1) sometimes the style shields changes. i.e. i made my map, but when i
change the area shown, the interstate style shields change into plain
circles.
2) i keep getting multiple instances of various sets of highways as i try to
make the shields appear correctly. it gets confusing to try to remember
which set is which!
