I think I know what you want. For that cases we made first the thematic map, then create the selection of what you want to show (the subset) then we use Combine selection, and create a selection with the opposite of your subset (the rest of your population) then going into Selection settings of the map window, set the Non selected group (the opposite set mentioned above) as Inactive Status, leaving the Selected as active, but without any hatching or colors, I think that will do. If you want to show only the selection, then turn the main Layer group (the first selection set of the list) as Invisible, for that case, you do not need the Non selected set.
