Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html
As I tried this out, finally sunk in what Peter was talking about. I won't
restate what Peter has already made clear, but in AV there is no capacity to
mix and match. An AV project is a workspace but it is much tighter. You have
one project open or you have another. There is no Maptitude-like Map file
which is sort of a workspace, but just for one window with a map in it, and
a dataview is a "workspace" for one window with a snapshot of data in it.
AV also allows only one view of the attribute data open at a time. In
Maptitude I have always warn my students to be sure they want to open
another dataview when there might be one already open. Its easier to hit the
dataview window than go to the Windows menu dropdown.
There is a (very) limited AV user made extension that allows one to keep
tract of comments and other metadata-like things as maps (views) are made.
Its pretty handy but it has bugs - a disadvantage of letting your users
develop your product for you.
It would be useful to be able to make comments about thematic maps, someway
to remind yourself just how the breakpoints were setup, etc. Idrisi has a
pretty good capacity in this regard as it would have to because so much
raster GIS depends on very complicated map algebra strings.

Richard:
I greatly enjoyed reading your comparison, and we will seriously consider
your suggested improvements to Maptitude. One note:
>A problem I have in AV as a result is that I cannot open two projects

>different MAPS from two different work spaces.
You can open two (or more) workspaces. Just choose File-Open Workspace,
open one, then repeat. A workspace file saves all of the settings for all
of the windows, including their position. A map file saves all of the
settings for that map window, except its position. Same for dataview,
layout, and figure windows. So, you can mix and match opening workspaces
(which remember multiple windows) and the files that remember individual
windows to get the windows that you want for a particular work session.
In sum, a workspace file is a snapshot of the database that keeps track of
your work session. Map, dataview, etc. files are snapshots of the subset of
that database that refer to a particular window.
