Yes, that sounds reasonable. It will greatly help if you run the branch command in a shared repository that already has a branch of mariadb (or failing that, mysql). This will make it only need to download the changes, not the whole history. (A shared repository is created with `bzr init-repo` if you didn't know already; it makes working with Launchpad much less painful.)
