ANNOUNCEMENT: ECS/ASCOBANS WORKSHOP ON "WIND FARMS AND MARINE
MAMMALS" to be held on Saturday 21 April 2007 at the 21st Annual
Conference of the European Cetacean Society, San Sebastien, Spain,
hosted by AZTI-Pasaia (web site:
http://www.azti.es/ecs2007/home.htm). It will take place in the
Aquarium between 15:00 and 19:30 (with a 30' coffee break). There
will be a fixed registration fee of 10ยค/person for coffee &
facilities.

Over the last ten years, the construction of offshore wind farms has
taken place in many shallow coastal areas throughout Europe. Many
groups have been contracted to investigate possible impacts on marine
mammals (notably harbour porpoise, harbour and grey seal), and this
has involved a variety of methodologies - visual surveys by boat and
plane, deployment of T-PODs, land-based observations, and radio
telemetry.

This workshop aims to review some of the findings so far with respect
to marine mammal impacts, and to recommend best practice for
monitoring species in the vicinity and possible effects both at the
construction and production phase.
