Dear MarMamers,

We would like to share our newly published open-access article comparing
humpback whale group size and composition estimated from boat-based
observations and drone video analysis during the 2022–2023 breeding seasons
in Ilhéus, Brazil.

Using data from 43 groups, we show that drones consistently recorded larger
group sizes and revealed more complex group compositions than boat-based
surveys, while maintaining a strong positive correlation between methods.
Our results highlight the value of drone-based surveys for improving
assessments of group structure during the breeding season.
