Just an afterthought to what provoked my earlier posts. I remember my mother making a distinction between a scientist and an engineer (she was a school teacher) as follows: A scientist is a fellow who always wants to know WHY - but couldn't care less what other people did with it when he found out. An engineer was someone who always wanted to figure out how he could do something for sixpence (½ a shilling - £0.025) what any fool could do for a bob (a shilling = £0.05). I became a scientist, but always craved to be an engineer ..... And perhaps I hoped to be an engineer of the human spirit - and achievement in human liberty and happiness.
