   Fred Magdoff and John Bellamy Foster: A `realistic' answer to the
   ecological crisis <http://links.org.au/node/2510>

   /"What is clear from ... Magdoff and Foster, is that 'what every
   environmentalist needs to know about capitalism' is that: 1) it is
   the root cause of the environmental crisis, 2) capitalism is
   incapable of solving it, either by going green or by becoming
   non-growth.'/

*John Bellamy Foster,* co-author with Fred Magdoff of /What every environmentalist needs to know about capitalism, /will be a featured international guest at the*second World at a Crossroads: Climate Change -- Social Change Conference <http://climatechangesocialchange2011.wordpress.com/>*, Friday, September 30 -- Monday, October 3, 2011. /*Reparations for the victims of the landslide of July 4!*/

September 22, 2011 -- Last August 11, Pakistan police used live bullets against people demanding payment of compensation allowances following a devastating landslide which had happened a year before in the valley of Hunza, on July 4, 2010. This landslide, in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan, destroyed several houses and important roads. The local administration abandoned the affected community and pocketed compensation payments intended for several affected families.

   Democracy Now! debate: Does UN statehood bid advance or undermine
   Palestinian struggle? <http://links.org.au/node/2508>

September 23, 2011 -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to officially submit a statehood request to the United Nations in defiance of U.S. and Israeli threats... While supporters have hailed the bid as a step forward in the struggle to end the Israeli occupation and bring peace to the Middle East, critics call it a ploy by the Palestinian Authority to cling to power while undermining the rights of Palestinian refugees. We host a debate with two leading Palestinian analysts: *Ali Abunimah*, co-founder of the website /The Electronic Intifada/ and author of /One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse/, and *Mouin Rabbani* of the Institute for Palestine Studies and the webzine /Jadaliyya/.

   Cuba: Voluntary work abolished -- a step forward?
   <http://links.org.au/node/2506>

By *Luis Sexto*, Havana
September 7, 2011 -- Voluntary work in Cuba, as a practice on weekdays or Sundays, has been abolished. In view of this action, neither original nor daring, one might suppose that the decision by the Cuban Trade Union Confederation (CTC) to end voluntary work, except in times of disaster or when enterprises face acute needs, has earned the implicit approval of most Cubans.

     Judge Lenard order's René González to live in Miami on supervised
     release

By *Jose Pertierra*
September 19, 2011 -- On September 16, a US federal district court judge made a bizarre ruling concerning one of the Cuban Five defendants who completes his jail sentence on October 7. Judge Joan Lenard ruled that René Gonzalez, who has already served 13 years in a federal penitentiary for being an unregistered agent of the Cuban government, will be forced for the next three years to live in Miami on what is called "supervised release".

   Denmark: Right-wing government defeated, Red-Green Alliance triples
   seats <http://links.org.au/node/2501>

By *Inger V. Johansen* and *Line Barfod*
September 20, 2011 --The result of the September 15 parliamentary elections in Denmark means that the right-wing government of the last 10 years has finally been ousted. A new government will be formed under the leadership of Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the leader of the Social Democrats. The core parties of this government will be the Social Democrats and the Socialist People's Party (SPP), who for some years have formed a close partnership with the aim of strengthening the possibilities for an alternative government.

   Martin Hart-Landsberg: Troubling economic trends for US workers
   <http://links.org.au/node/2500>

By *Martin Hart-Landsberg *

September 15, 2011 -- The US Census Bureau just published new data revealing trends in living standards as of 2010. The trends are troubling to say the least. Median household income (adjusted for inflation) fell to US $49,445 (see below). That means that the median household in the United States now earns less than it did a decade ago.

   Spain: 'Hot' autumn of protest brews <http://links.org.au/node/2499>

By *Dick Nichols*, Barcelona
September 11, 2011 -- In Spain the signs are unmistakable: a "hot autumn" of political and social conflict is brewing in the run-up to the November 20, 2011, general election. Polling night will reveal how much the growing social resistance, brought onto the streets since May largely by the 15-M movement of "indignants", has shaken up the political scene.

   US rulers turned 9/11 outrage into blank cheque for endless war
   <http://links.org.au/node/2498>

By *Rupen Savoulian*
September 17, 2011 -- Near where I live in Sydney, there is a war memorial commemorating all those people from the area who have died serving the Australian armed forces in wars overseas. There are columns for each war Australians have participated in, followed by the names of those who never returned. For instance, there are columns for World War I (1914-1918), World War II (1939-1945), the Korean War (1950-53), and also the "International Campaign against Terrorism (2001-- )". Notice that last one? Unlike the others, the war on terror has no end date.

Links seeks to promote the international exchange of information, experience of struggle, theoretical analysis and views of political strategy and tactics within the international left. It is a forum for open and constructive dialogue between active socialists coming from different political traditions. It seeks to bring together those in the international left who are opposed to neoliberal economic and social policies. It aims to promote the renewal of the socialist movement in the wake of the collapse of the bureaucratic model of "actually existing socialism" in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
