I have been hearing mention of the MEK recently, but it was only in reading
this article that I made the connection to a meeting I attended in the early
90's. At that time the Freedom Socialist Party had a branch in Vancouver, BC.
They had a public forum on the struggle in Iran. Part of the presentation was
a video of a group conducting armed struggle in Iran. I noticed that they were
operating tanks. It occurred to me that you couldn't get a tank into Iran
without the co-operation of a neighbouring country. It was clear that the
neighbour was iraq. So it was clear that the MEK was receiving weapons from
Saddam Hussein.
One of the FSP's leaders was there from Seattle. I think it was Andrea Bauer,
but i can't say that with complete certainty. But I remember clearly her
response when I expressed my concern over the connection with Hussein, "Isn't
it great to see the weapons used in this way?"
I was not impressed with her answer and I am even less impressed now that I
have read this article.
