I've read quite a few things on the FAZ's coverage of the Hula massacre and I'm no wiser now than I was before. I've come to the perhaps abstentionist conclusion that those who see Assad's regime as some sort of positive anti-imperialist force consider the FAZ report to be true, whilst those who have a similarly romantic view of the opposition in Syria write it off as improbable. I feel that the regime's forces and auxiliaries could well be responsible for this atrocity; I also feel that there are elements amongst the opposition who could well be responsible. It's crossed my mind that there is also the possibility that it could be the result of an apolitical family feud. I'm reminded of the Yugoslav collapse, when supporters abroad of the contending forces within the disintegrating federation based their opinions on the responsibility for specific atrocities upon their attitudes towards the different forces at play. The infamous bombing of a marketplace in Sarajevo and the debate whether it was the responsibility of Bosnian Serb forces firing a mortar, or that of a provocation by the Bosnian Muslim authorities, comes to mind.
