If anyone is interested in NZ politics. . . Yesterday, Saturday, there was a by-election in Northland. The seat has been held by the National Party for 50 years. They lost it yesterday to Winston Peters, the leader of the NZ First party. Peters is probably the longest-serving MP in the current parliament. (For the last few terms he has been a list MP, having lost his constituency about nine years ago to National; NZ has an MMP system, where people are MPs by either winning a seat or because their party got over 5% of the party vote.) Peters is notorious for his anti-Asian immigration stand. However, he also favours Keynesian economics and shares a lot of his NZ nationalism with large chunks of the left, many of whom supported a Peters' victory in Northland.
