My assumption is this is a big defeat for the Church and a symbol and marker of how much influence it has lost, no doubt in no small part due to its recurring severe scandals, as well as shifting social views putting it at odds with younger generation. I'd be interested to see if this has a flow on in terms of the much more controversial issue in Ireland of a woman's right to choose, where the laws remain horrific.
