David, on the aggregate data you gave, were you lumping together 
freight & human transport?  If so, some of the data might be 
misleading.

One other anecdote: I see railroad track quite often when I travel 
around the US.  I did not recall seing any railroads or even track 
outside of the train station.  I was on the heavily populated coastal 
lands.  The density of railroads must be even thinner in the relatively 
unpopulated west.

I would expect that China's higher proportion of new stock would make 
its railroads more efficient.
