I will add to what Louis said: If you think that the U.S. gives half a damn about the behavior of the Taliban, think again. When Jimmy Carter was president, they were the "fierce Islamic fighters" who were going to save Afghanistan from "godless communism." It was the same when Reagan was president. Now that imperialism can't depend on them to secure the country for Unocal's pipeline, they are "terrorists." Don't believe a word that comes out of Obama's, Clinton's, or Gates's mouth.
