Props to the folks at Berkley who not only challenged Madeline Albright by disrupting her commencement address with banners and voices but who also garnered some great press coverage. Be on the lookout for speakers such as Albright, Bush, Gore or Holbrooke speaking at commencements in your area--and make sure you have a presence wherever they are. Do what your group is comfortable with, but don't be afraid to get a little noisy! I have articles from the San Fran Chronicle and Examiner for those interested. Again, if you're interested in more news, I encourage you to subscribe to the Iraq Action Coalition's list serve moderated by Rania Masri. She has begun to distribute news summaries two or three times a week. A great way to stay informed. To Subscribe, send a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The text from Denis Halliday's May 3 Congressional Briefing is available via email. I haven't come across the von Sponeck or Ritter transcript. Another reminder that if you are interested in the Campaign of Conscience for the Iraqi people, let me know how many participant forms you want, and I'll get them to you! Join us to protest and vigil against the sanctions that have killed over a million Iraqi civilians. While it is clear that the deadly sanctions remain in place because of U.S. and British insistence, the policy is officially a United Nations policy. Kofi Annan should and can refuse to be a pawn in this illegal war. Lift the sanctions of mass destruction and end the Oil for No Food Program! Meet at 8:30pm outside Gate 2, Stanford Stadium Foster Field, Galvez, Palo Alto. (Embarcadero becomes Galvez after the junction with El Camino Real) Parking at Town & County mall (El Camino & Embarcadero, NE corner) Entry to the Commencement is free and open - no ticket needed. Bring signs. Please try to make it at 8:30am - a large turn-out is more impressive and newsworthy. But if you really can't get there that early, it's ok to come later. Jordan Times Sanctions are strengthening Saddam, time for change: analysts KUWAIT CITY, May 14 (AFP) - The decade-old UN sanctions on Iraq have only served to strengthen President Saddam Hussein, Western and Arab analysts agreed at a forum in Kuwait Sunday. They called for a fresh approach to containing the Iraqi leader and warned Saddam's ambitions to control the region had not changed, and he would rebuild his military might if Iraq were allowed direct access to its oil revenue. "The economic crisis in Iraq did not become a political and security crisis for the regime. Instead, sanctions have turned into a tool to support Saddam," said Mustafa Alani of Britain's Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies. "After 10 years of imposing them, sanctions have failed to achieve their target," Alani, who is also an Iraqi opposition figure, told the second day of a three-day symposium on future Iraq-Kuwait ties. "No system seems to be working fully. I think it's time to explore some new ideas," said Kenneth Katzman of the US Congressional Research Center. Iraqi opposition, Gulf ministers to address seminar on Kuwaiti-Iraqi ties. AFP. May 11. Summary: Key Iraqi opposition figures and Gulf ministers addressed a seminar in Kuwait on the political changes in Baghdad and their implications for future ties.
