News from New Trade Union Initiative Asia to Gaza Caravan seen off by hundreds of Syrians and Palestinian Refugees at Damascus Press Release 25 December, Delhi: Asia to Gaza Caravan seen off by hundreds of Syrians and Palestinian Refugees at Damascus The Palestine Solidarity Caravan has now traveled from Rajghat in Delhi, through Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon and Syria. It is now waiting to board a ship at the port town of Latakia in Syria for the port of Al Arish in Egypt from where it aims to take the Rafah border crossing to deliver aid to people in besieged Gaza Strip. At Damascus hundreds of Syrians and Palestinian refugees attended the colourful send off programme organised for the Asia to Gaza caravan. All Palestinian parties, groups and factions led by Khalid Abd al-Majid of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front (PPSF) were present. Speaking at the meeting Majid congratulated the caravan and said that, ‘since the time of Gamal Abdel Nasser, this caravan is the first effort that marks the unity of all Asian people as an important advance in the Palestinian resistance’. Abd al-Majid’s PPSF operates in exile from Syria. The caravan was also welcomed by Khaled Meshaal, the political leader of the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas, as well as Ramadan Abdullah, the leader of the Palestinian group of Islamic Jihad. “We really appreciate your effort to keep this momentum and to follow up your work,” Abdullah said. A seven-member delegation of Iranian legislators joined the caravan in Damascus. At the port town of Latakia the caravan was received by several thousands of people. It was welcomed by a school band playing the Internationale.
