Another aspect of the policy which successfully reduced the number of cases per day in Melbourne from over 700 to zero was the compulsory wearing of masks when away from home.
The federal Liberal government doubled the jobseeker allowance, a poverty level welfare payment to the unemployed. Normally they are very happy for the unemployed to live in extreme poverty, because they think this will motivate them to look for work. But when the pandemic hit, the number of unemployed rose dramatically. A lot of people who normally vote Liberal lost their jobs, so they could no longer write them off as lazy people who don't want to work. But as the economy begins to recover, the jobseeker allowance is being progressively cut back. The government wants to take it back to the extreme poverty level again.
