This might get the dander up for a few but Monteiro and others in the past 30 years have argued in the realm of Du Bois scholarship that we should see the writings of Du Bois as Marxian (though not Orthodox Marxist) from beginning to end. Historical scholarship shows that Du Bois was deeply impacted by the pre-WWI German Socialist Party (ironically, the moment of that party's high Kautsky-ist zenith, the moment that the Jacobin editorial board masturbates over constantly). As early as Souls of Black Folk there is a dialectical materialism at play in his writings. By the time of Black Reconstruction in America he is invoking Leninist terminology to argue that the Reconstruction era was a proletarian revolution akin to the events 50 years later in Russia. (His literary executor Herbert Aptheker, one of the major ideological heads of the CPUSA after WWII, always disputed this assertion. The aforementioned Ignatiev wrote a great article, "American Blindspot" <https://libcom.org/library/american-blindspot-reconstruction-according-eric-foner-web-du-bois-noel-ignatiev>, that is a very through rebuttal to this gripe.)
