People should not get too lost in the treats on this. Party politics has never meant what partisans claimed (and claim) it does. Trump's father was associated with the Democratic party. None of this had to do with ideology or values but with rooting his success in the importance of the party machine to his real estate business. Donald J. Trump supported Reagan along with the fictional Archie Bunker for much the same reason. But he went back to the Democrats afterwards.
However, even this wobble on his part was unnecessary since the Reagan era Democrats were Reaganites in the sense it's being used here. They embraced supply-side economics, supported his policies, and covered up his murderous, subversive, treasonable Iran-Contra project, for which his ex-CIA vice president, Bush the Elder had been the bag man. Indeed, Reagan made the Democatic party what it is as completely as he made the Republicans what they are. More so, on one level: the Democrats have bought into the ideas while the Republicans under Trump are, in no sense, conservative. The best argument that the Trump usually under discussion is the heir of Reagan probably centers on his being a cardboard cutout media celebrity. In the real world, though, Trump and his clan are self-serving grifters. They'll say anything or do anything to win and their measure of winning winds up financial. Reagan, Biden and other politicians of the past have always politely deferred to those types with a general understanding that they'd not be interested in the grubby work of holding office. Perhaps because of the bipartisan changes in campaign financing laws, we'll see more of them. Because it serves them--and they have the money to make it happen--we can expect an increasing proportion of complete dummies in office as well--Gaetz, Gohmert, Jordan, Greene, etc. Cheers, Mark L. this is bigger than lines of individual succession and continuity. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
