Kotkin is an ideologue repeating shibboleths. I looked at the section of Book II that touches on the Spanish civil war and the International Brigades. It has a few interesting takes on those events but he gets distracted by these quasi-pornographic renderings of the purges and show trials, almost akin to Thomas Harris writing about Hannibal Lechter.
