I met, knew and admired both brave Brigade volunteers (who did not decide and make policies) but also leftwing Spaniard refugees that I met in Mexico, who fought both Franco forces and the Spain Stalinists.
The historical facts and results of the Stalinists cult of the individual, does not matter for those who think religious and not materialist and want "daddy figures" to follow - and "alternate facts", as the religious right wing thinking. The Stalinists insistence that everything had to be "under their control" especially follow the party line and loyalty to the "Dear Leaders". Despite all that is known and what happened - they remain "the faithful" deniers. Had the Stalinist leadership that included Dolores Ibarruri, focused on fighting the Franco forces and let the anarchists alone to have their spaces to show a different organizational expression and actual experiment on governance and service, perhaps Franco, Mussolini and Hitler could be defeated in Spain. It was not just the capitalists who embargoed desperate needed supplies to the anti-fascists, it was the actual "in practice" disunity that the Stalinists kept doing - while stating was a real problem, but it was their own mental needs "to have control of all thoughts" and only felt secured in their own beliefs - THAT THEY WERE TOLD - and HAD to support, or be "traitors". Dolores Ibarruri and Joseph Stalin of course, decided WHO was traitors.
