Stalin was a strong leader and deserves credit for defeating German fascism as 
much as he deserves credit for the purges and the gulags. Had he not been the 
leader would the fifth column and those supporting nationalism and fascism 
weakened those efforts? There are no "ifs" in history. Of course it is the 
people who deserve the most credit but they do not exist as a unified force on 
their own.
