I will first of all say that some of the ground here was - as you have noted also - been covered in a series of correspondences in Marxmail earlier (messages starting I thikn with Richard Fidler at 09/06/21 #11159 ). ( https://groups.io/g/marxmail/message/11159 ) In very broad summary Claudio Katz was for a position that China was "neither imperialist nor part of the Global South"; and I interpret both Esteban Mercatante and - certainly Patrick Bond - as calling China "sub-imperialist". Walter Daum (09/09/21 #11212) has sympathy for this but argues that Katz's: "class analysis of China is unclear: he says that it is neither capitalist nor socialist but somewhere in between. That raises the basic Marxist question, what is the ruling class?" My argument there was (09/11/21 #11284) on re-reading somewhat skimpy (to be charitable to myself!).
I'll try to be clearer with some more detail up to the period when Liu Shao Chi was still leading the CPC.
