How one characterizes the the regime - even as "state capitalist" - matter less
to me than whether the 1949 revolution is considered an "earth-shaking" and
"emancipatory" event, whose effects are felt to this day.  In fact, one could
argue, as I have, that the greatest advances in the material conditions of the
masses occured after and in reaction to the Maoist period, and is widely
perceived this way within China despite the inequality which accompanied the
70's NEP-like turn to the market.

My impression from this discussion is that those who see the PRC as capitalist
and imperialist don't consider that it represents an historic advance - or
ceased to be such following Deng - because it falls short of their various
conceptions of the socialist ideal. The subtext is that capitalism, considered
by the classical Marxists to have exhausted its capacity for developing the
productive forces. has been succeeded not by socialism but by a more dynamic
form of capitalism which has expanded them in China at an historically
unmatched pace.
