Charlie, I think this article sidesteps the issues raised in
https://climateandcapitalism.com/2024/06/13/two-views-both-wrong-on-marx-degrowth-and-productivism/,
particularly the role of growth and commodity production. The article
mentions some of the harmful effects of infinite growth of food commodities:
"We are told that we must stop eating particular things or save them for a
once-a-month treat. The industrial production of meat takes too much grain,
gives off too much greenhouse gas, and poisons the soil with half-treated
waste. Factory farms are a global polluting machine. Most food should be grown
and raised locally, using more labor and less chemicals."
The quote sounds skeptical about more than the futility of exhorting
individuals to change their individual habits, which hasn't been and won't be
effective. Instead, the section "Environmentalists, technology, and fiscal
nudges" identifies "technology" as the problem:
"It is understandable when we see the emission of greenhouse gases as a
consequence of technology."
The quote points to technology as a proximate cause, capitalism as the ultimate
cause, and "socialism and technology" as the ultimate solution. I'd classify
the article's approach as "productivist" with its emphasis on the change of the
energy base. Our current energy base is a problem that will take at least a
generation to transform, but the overuse of it must be addressed today, and the
energy-unregulated, capitalist technology industry is a promising place to
start.
