The UN-endorsed Australian military intervention in East Timor occurred after
the referendum in which the people of East Timor voted for independence. The
purpose of the intervention was to suppress the attempt of pro-Indonesia
militias - backed by the occupying Indonesian army - to overturn the referendum
result.

The question I was dealing with in my previous message was why the Indonesian
government agreed to allow the holding of an internationally supervised
referendum in the first place. I linked this to the rise of the democracy
movement in Indonesia.

Of course , a section of the Indonesian ruling class did not agree with the
decision to hold the referendum, and instigated a violent response to the
result. Michael Karadjis rightly points out that the Democratic Socialist
Party joined the mass demonstrations in Australia calling for troops to sent to
East Timor to defend the referendum result.
