Chris Hedges has written a recent statement regarding the attempted assassination of Trump. To summarize, he states that Democrats have turned Trump into the latest boogey man, when in fact Trump is but a reflection of a systemic crisis. This is of course true. However, this has raised an important set of questions for me. It basically comes down to this; had Hitler been killed in WW1 (or not born at all) what would have happened in Germany in the 30’s. We know that Germany was in extreme crisis and the class struggle was in full throttle. Nevertheless, it was Hitler that united the right-wing Nationalist groups and parties, eliminated competing factions and led the murderous onslaught against the left (and others). Extending this question to the contemporary US, the question is; what forms would the right take in the absence of DT? If that assassin had been successful, who would have replaced Trump as the Republican candidate? I can’t think of anyone that posesses the unique qualities of DT. Qualities that make him the personification of the reactionary, ignorant and violent nature of American “patriots”. The trajectory of the US capitalist class is obviously towards authoritarianism, but in the absence of Trump would it be moving as quickly as it seems to be doing? I could go on, but I think you get my point. Would love to hear any thoughts.
