I'm not in the US and I don't quite understand how your Medicare is funded, although I understand it is some kind of 'opt in' health insurance. So is this sum a state contribution or something else? Can someone explain? Here in NZ we have a hybrid (inadequately funded) public system and a private (with health insurance) model, mainly to jump the queue on profitable procedures.
