> the Fall of Civilizations

We swapped the word "empire" for "civilization" in this thread. Do we sometimes
confuse the two, or are they the same? I can remember much about the Aztec
empire but need to look up the name of the republic that the Aztecs fought but
never conquered, Tlaxcala. We often overlook more egalitarian societies in
favor of empires. The fall of an empire, however, may benefit its vassal states
and be a good thing. The fall of civilization sounds like a "Dark Age."
Despite the original meaning of the word "civilized," we associate
"civilization" with an enlightened society.

So I wonder if the series on the Fall of Civilizations sees an upside to some
of the falls.
