In 1968 I was in high school in Nee Hampshire & my algebra teacher was a delegate so voted for Eugene McCarthy. I agree that Humphrey would have been better than Nixon. And Bernie would have been better than Trump.

OK.  Here’s a tough one.   What is the difference between today and 1968?    I was among the folks who refused to vote for Humorey — actually reveled in the attacks on him.   But with 20-20 hindsight I think Humphrey might have withdrawn from Vietnam sooner than Nixon with therefore less loss of life.   So maybe I (we) were wrong???

Around 2016 at the S.F. Conservatory I heard Angela Davis make the same argument for voting for Hillary—she would create space for democracy.  I was rather shocked, given Hillary’s  brutal imperialism: as Senator she voted to invade Iraq and as Sec. of State pushed Obama to bomb Libya. The Conservatory was presenting music with political messages; Davis narrated a piece by a Marxist composer.  After the performance there was an onstage discussion at which Davis made her remark.
