I had not appreciated that Bogdanov had died of an exchange transfusion in an un-matched recipient-donor situation. at least I think it was likely to have been un-matched, the review you cite Jim does not make that clear. It says merely: "Bogdanov was a prominent Bolshevik and a pioneer in blood transfusion who founded and directed the Institute for Blood Transfusion until his death in 1928. (As it happened, Bogdanov died from a transfusion, after exchanging his blood with the blood of a critically ill student, who ultimately recovered.)"
Yet by 1907 there was an understanding of the need to start to move to matching: >From the Red Cross: "Ludvig Hektoen suggests that the safety of transfusion >might be improved by cross-matching blood between donors and patients to >exclude incompatible mixtures. Reuben Ottenberg performs the first blood transfusion using blood typing and cross-matching" ( https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/blood-donation-process/what-happens-to-donated-blood/blood-transfusions/history-blood-transfusion.html ) I fear if it was unmatched, and it was an 'exchange Tx' - rather than a simple blood donation to a very sick young man - it does not speak highly of his scientific understanding. His motivation I am sure was compassionate. Nonetheless - I think this fits with the view I have of him from Lenin's critique of him. As I recall it, in that work 'Empirio-Criticism' etc - Lenin was pretty up-to-date on scientific developments on the ground.
