FWIW, I also found Klein’s article interesting, but at bottom mainly intended
to rally the Democratic troops discouraged by Trump's election and flurry of
activity. Klein points to Trump’s low approval ratings, the contradictions
within MAGA and the still formidable checks on executive power by the courts
and Congress as reason to believe any ambitions he has of an imperial
presidency will be thwarted. I've felt for a long time that the danger of Trump
usurping the powers of other branches of government is greatly overblown since
the existing system continues to serve the US ruling class very well,
notwithstanding its internal differences over trade policy and how much state
regulation and spending is warranted.

The margin of Trump’s victory this time round gives the right-wing Republicans
more scope to deepen their long-standing support of tax cuts and deregulation
which marked his first term. I expect these changes will continue to proceed
quietly behind closed doors with the support of Congress and the courts and
involving some compromise. The more theatrical public action will be mainly
intended to secure the Republican base whose material interests run counter to
the administration's agenda. The executive orders over the past two weeks,
including the intended purge of the federal bureaucracy, fits this pattern.
They were designed to create the impression of radical action against the
“elites” and the “deep state” but were aimed at soft targets, the customary
scapegoats fed to the MAGA base  - liberal academics, civil servants, trans
people, and immigrants as well as foreign states, friends and foes alike,
perceived to be unfairly taking jobs away from hard-working Americans.
