The theory according to which US attacked Venezuela and because of that it became an authoritarian regime is simply false. The US endorsed a coupt attempt in 2002 and a bosses' lock out in 2002-2003. But Chávez did not apply a state of exception, he did not intervene the parliament nor did he commit an open electoral fraud in the ten years after that. It was Maduro who in 2015-2016 implemented a state of exception, de facto annulled the National Assembly (after losing by a landslide) and applied widespread electoral frauds ever since. It was clearly not in response to the 2002-2003 coup tentatives but in response to the fact that Maduro lost popular and electoral majority in 2015 (he barely won the 2013 elections but went downward since and never recovered a majority). Maybe some Maduristas will think that is a legitimate strategy for a bourgeois government they deem "antiimperialist", to hold on to power by any means or whatever, but then they should say so honestly and not try to distort history for it to fit their peculiar theories.
