I’ve participated in an interesting discussion of the Rockhill book on another
list. Ironically, like many of the Western Marxists he criticizes, my
impression is that Rockhill doesn’t appreciate that Western Marxist idealism is
primarily an effect rather than the cause of the failure of the world socialist
revolution to begin in the advanced capitalist countries. Nor does he seem to
accept that the social revolutions which instead broke out in the predominantly
peasant periphery would inevitably develop the political deformations common to
less developed states under military and economic siege. If he does recognize
that China, Vietnam, Cuba and the other post-revolutionary states have all made
significant concessions to capitalism at home and abroad, they have not altered
his view that these states represent “actually existing socialism”.
