History is the ultimate test, Hari, but isn’t the vanguard party predicated on the assumption that it is both necessary and possible to judge and select those best equipped by temperament and understanding to lead? That is the ideal, of course, and not easily realizable in a period when the class struggle is at a low ebb and the party or pre-party formation is relegated to the sidelines and prone to acquiring the characteristics of a sect. But I don’t think it invalidates the concept so long as it is accepted that the demands of democratic centralism in Lenin’s time were quite different than the need for strict party discipline and political homogeneity in our own.
