Since the year of the poem is 1935 and the Moscow trials did not begin until 
1936, Gandall performs the miracle of reversing time when he suggests the poem 
is "a parody of ...the Moscow purge trials." True, Gandall might "read" the 
poem that way; Brecht cannot have written the poem that way. But it gives 
Gandall occasion to speak of "pro-Soviet oppositionists" – who worked in secret 
to overthrow the Soviet Union. We get bad history dressed in miraculous 
literary work. But let us respect Gandall's claim that he is not now but was a 
Trotsky---.
