I share David’s understanding of Trotskyism as a movement with a program, not as an epithet to be loosely applied to those like myself who respect Trotsky as a theorist and a revolutionary but who don’t belong to the movement. As many on the list know, I belonged to it in the late 60’s and early 70’s which is where I learned to appreciate the vanguard party model as the best means of organizing and politically educating radicalizing youth, recognizing . the need to build institutional safeguards against personality cults and other sectarian deformations to which ther model is prone when marginalized as in our lifetime. On a theoretical level, I don't accept that the passivity of the contemporary working class is mostly owing it being restrained by a “crisis of leadership” within its ranks - the premise on which the Trotskyist program (and others) is based - rather than by the general rise in living standards following WW II, which has only recently begun to reverse itself, accompanied by early signs of working class revival.
