A couple of years ago, I evaluated a system from DEC. There's an
"access port," that can plug into a hub. It kinda serves as a
repeater, for the cards in individual machines. This would fix you
up without adding a card to your Linux box.
I don't remember the chipset in the ISA cards, but I do remember
thinking of this card at some point, while I was going through the
cards in the kernel reconfiguration. I think they're still
supported. The whole DEC solution was very expensive, and probably
still is.
I've been watching this area a little, and it's not evolving the way
I'd like. Many of the new systems seem to plug into parallel ports,
which limits their usefulness with "serious" networks right there.
I've got Microsoft, Novell and Linux systems to integrate at home
(ok, home office), and none of them address my needs.
If you can't find a solution, write back, and I'll try to dig up some
more stuff.
