You are seeing the other machines because the Samba box is acting as subnet
master browser. Though this will work for directly connected networks,
other networks behind routers will have problems. This is why you need
a WINS server.
Also.. Samba will work just fine for machines that are privately addressed.
Private addressing only becomes an issue when you are trying to route
this traffic over the Internet. Ifs its an isolated internal network,
don't worry about it.
