Since someone recently posted a VoIP question, I'll
forward on my research so far since I'm doing the same thing
now.

Here are a few ideas for hardware issues:
This thing will convert your sound card directly into
a RJ-11 phonejack. Then you can use ANY speaker phone:
$50 http://www.infinet.com/~jectech/ipatch.htm
This one is a whole phone/speakerphone setup
$89 http://www.iact.com/
This is a Internet phone encoder. Overkill.
$159 http://www.quicknet.net (eouch!)
What do you think? Which would be better? I think
it would be kinda cool to have a dedicated phone for
all this and not something you patch over, use it, and
then patch it back into your phone line. Question is..
how good is its speaker phone, etc.
Software solutions:
VoIP for Linux and Windows 9x/NT
http://www.speakfreely.org
RPMs: http://nc.us.mirrors.freshmeat.net/
Roger Wilco (windows clients with Linux server)
- Specifically written to co-exist with
Windows gaming. Works ok but it has cut out
BattleZone sound for me on a SB32.
http://www.resounding.com/
Battle Com (windows client)
- specifically written to co-exist with
Windows gaming
http://www.battlecom.com
or
www.shadowfactor.com
Vocaltec Internet Phone (windows based client)
- Is probably the best VoIP client for
Windows but its expensive and only for
Windows.
www.vocaltec.com
BuddyPhone:
- Windows only
www.buddyphone.com
Here are a few more good URLs for researching this stuff:
http://www.tmcnet.com/it/
http://www.linuxtelephony.com
After all this, the next hard thing will be finding
a good Internet telephone program. Lots of them
are out there for Windows.. Linux will be harder
but there are a few now.
