The problem with my system was the initscripts. During boot it could not find the module dependencies. Is this showing on yours? Try getting the file initscripts-3.67-1.i386.rpm from redhat and run rpm -Uvh initscripts-3.67-1.i386.rpm and try to recompile. This worked for me for the exact same problem. There are also many other fixes at redhat that might help. I suggest getting all the updates that apply to your system and install using the same procedure as above.
