markers and lines have different property names.
plot([0.5],[0.5], '.', markersize=50, markerfacecolor=(0.5,0.5,0.5))
the properties that control markers are markerfacecolor,
markeredgecolor and markeredgewidth, with abbreviations mfc, mec and
mew.
