I am not just "trying", I am indeed implementing a software package for species distribution mapping and biogeographic analysis, using wxPython/Matplotlib. And, by the way, it is going quite well. Both Thuban and QGis, as generalized implementations of GIS, are far from adequate for my needs (and of fellow conservation biologists). Hope this helps.
