>I'd try it again, maybe on another machine. An 80 mhz machine ( even an 80 >mhz mac) IS slow - plus, in spite of what is often said about ram >requirements being minimal, I'd use at least 128 meg. An 80 MHz Mac is likely Nubus, and not supported by YDL officially. What isn't said about the 'minimum' requirements for Linux distributions is that low figure assumes you have a large quantity of patience to offset the small quantity of processing power you have ;) Also, many of the 'minimum' requirements assume you _won't_ be running X Windows. If you don't turn off background processes you won't use, don't have much RAM, and don't have a fast hard drive, linux can seem slow if you run X Windows. I have found linux in command-line only mode to be much faster than OS 8.x on a 8100/110 or a 7300/132. On a 9600/233 with 192 MB of RAM, Linux with X Windows is as fast or faster than Mac OS 8.x or 9.x, and _much_ faster than OS X. Hard for me to compare BeOS, it's been so long since I've run it. Linux won't magically turn your computer into a speed demon, particularly if you don't take the time to optimize it for your system. I like to run Mac hardware until it drops dead, but sometimes I have to wipe a tear from my eye and say goodbye. It is _much_ harder to install/configure than any other OS available to run on Mac hardware (well, maybe Darwin is harder). I use Linux on Mac hardware because the services I want to run will run faster under Linux than other Mac-hardware OS's. I generally only use the command line on all of the Linux machines we have, both Intel and Mac. Lynx is faster than Mozilla ;) I'm sure we'll hear from the NetBSD crowd about speed ... ;) -- Charles Dostale System Administrator Silver Oaks Communications http://www.silveroaks.com 824 17th Street Moline IL USA 61265 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 309-797-9898 -- MaX-list is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> MaX-list info: <http://lowendmac.com/linux/max.shtml> Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/max-list%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Macintosh?
